The 27 Club is a list of musicians and other celebrities who died at the age of 27. It includes luminaries like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix. With that songbook, it’s difficult to get it wrong and 27 Club does not disappoint. The Adelaide festivals aren’t particularly rock and roll, and it takes a few songs to get a feel for the audience. The band soon find their groove though and things take off at a sprint. When there are 13 guitars and only three guitarists on stage at any given moment, you know they’re either compensating for something, or are undoubtedly consummate professionals (hint: it’s the latter). Kevin Mitchell and Sarah McLeod’s storytelling, both in and out of song, draws the audience in while Dusty Lee Stephensen’s rock and roll electricity soon gets people dancing in their seats. However, the real stand out is Carla Lippis. Whether it’s a power ballad, dirty blues, or a hardcore rock anthem, Lippis has the crowd in the palm of her hand. The main performers are accompanied by some of Adelaide’s finest rhythm section players who elevate the performance with unwavering unity. 27 Club replaces tragedy with triumph, as the audience is taken through the incredible lives of the artists that helped shape music as we know it today. Rock on.
