With a swoop of energy, vocalist Simi Vuata led his band and captured his audience from the moment he stepped on stage. Celebrating the Icons of Soul, the show was crafted to fit within a one-hour performance, Simi Vuata acknowledges that there is not enough time to explore all of the artists deserving but, with his own storytelling and talented vocal abilities, pays homage to the icons and voices of soul music. From Whitney Houston to Sam Cooke, The Temptations to Tina Turner, Simi really shone with the Etta James rendition. This was a celebration, but also an acknowledgement of the hard work and driving nature of artists that had come before us, paving the way for change and acceptance, it was very fitting that the show had taken place at Nexus Arts, Leaders in culturally diverse and intercultural artistic practice. The band was big, which Simi lead with ease, it was wonderful to watch and the relationship between the saxophonist and Simi was a delight as they played off each other. Although it was a seated performance, there were a few who couldnā€™t help but dance by the end; you can see why Simi gained nationwide popularity as one of the top performers on The Voice in 2015; his personality and playfulness kept the audience engaged throughout the show, the encore rang out past the hour with the pianist leading more soulful songs with Simiā€™s vocals. 4/5 Stars āāāā Music of Colour: Celebrating the Icons of Soul is on one more night on the Saturday 24th of February.
