YUMMY: The Kids Extravaganza! is a combination of circus and dance, with hyper colours and an energy level reminiscent of a Hi-5 concert, and a loose storyline about following your dreams. It was hosted by ‘Barry Gumnut’ the space unicorn, and featured four talented circus/dance performers and was accompanied by a bright, sugar-filled soundtrack. Kids were encouraged to dance along, and some did, and while this venue with its raked seating doesn’t easily provide room for this, kids and adults alike were grooving along in their seats. Hannie was entertaining with her tidy hula hoop routine, and Richard’s chef-themed juggling act was slick. Carly the tap dancer is a skilled dancer and she played well to all corners of the audience. Unfortunately the floor is not designed for taps and it was difficult to hear her fancy footwork, but she made up for that by moving parts of her routine to the steps between the audience, a move which was well-received. Standout act was Jarred the ‘marine biologist’, whose arial routine was an impressive display of strength, flexibility and balance, defying gravity while also giving the impression of being underwater. The storyline of ‘no dream is too crazy’ loosely connected the acts, and a sneaky Gummy Bear villain provided fun moments for the audience to call out, ‘He’s behind you!’ There were some parts of the story that didn’t make a lot of sense, such as the random surfing competition, but that really didn’t matter to the target audience, who were engaged and having a ball. With a sweet message about following your dreams, a whole lot of energy and neon costumes, and a villain that was much more cuddly than scary, this is a show that will greatly appeal to younger audiences.
