Never before has acrobatics, live music, and contemporary dance come together so perfectly! The Defiant is a sensational show and a must-watch of the Fringe this year. Debuting at The Peacock at Gluttony, lose yourself in the blend of death-defying stunts and cheeky smiles from an all-female show that cannot be beaten.

Audiences find themselves at the edge of their seats from the opening act. The performers begin the show with a high adrenaline progression of stunts, tumbling, twirling and flying through the air. As the live rock music kicks in, the story follows suit, revealing a tale of defiance against the heinous reality of being “normal”. Proving that people are truly capable of superhuman feats, the acrobats come together for an exciting, mesmerising, and gripping show.

Although they perform their best together, dazzling onlookers with beautifully choreographed group stunts, the show allows individual performers to shine with different acts. From aerial silks and hoop work to juggling balls and contemporary body isolation, audiences get a great taste of what a top-quality circus looks like, with acts like trapeze work and aerial straps getting the crowd roaring for more.

Performing to an almost fully packed venue, it’s clear to see that I’m not the only one raving about The Defiant. With the crowd eating out of their hands, the performers bring a one-two punch of charm and sass to truly work the audience, a testament to their abilities as professional entertainers.

Not a single hand, foot, or hair was out of place throughout the performance. The only issue I could find was that I didn’t want it to end. The Defiant showcases the power of women and gender diverse individuals, and builds on the desire to break free from the confines of the world. At its core, The Defiant shows audiences that there is more to life than eating, working, and sleeping. Certainly, don’t expect to be doing upside-down splits from the ceiling at the office after watching it. But the show really does speak to embracing your passions for all the world to see.

The kind and, at times, cheeky smiles between the acrobats really draw audiences in for a family-friendly show that is truly a highlight of the Adelaide Fringe this year. I would not be surprised if The Defiant took home Best Circus of 2022! What are you waiting for? Get your tickets to see The Defiant now before they sell out!
