Stepping into the Mezzanine at Plant 4 Bowden felt like entering a time capsule of queer culture and musical history, thanks to the dazzling world premiere of A Friend of Dorothy – Anthems of Pride. Written and performed by Adelaide cabaret veteran Lindsay Prodea, this 70 minute celebration of iconic music and personal revelation was equal parts heartfelt memoir, queer homage, and vocal powerhouse showcase.

From the moment Prodea took the stage, backed by a polished four-piece band, the audience was swept into a soundscape of anthems that have become the heartbeat of queer identity. Hits from Madonna, Elton John, Cole Porter, Lady Gaga, David Bowie and more were not just performed, but reborn, delivered with conviction and emotional depth that made them feel as vital now as ever.

In between the high notes and camp melodies are Prodea’s deeply personal stories of growth, resistance, and queer joy. From humorous childhood memories of trying on clothes from his costume trunk to reflections on his coming out, his storytelling never overreaches. It’s honest, moving, and refreshingly unpretentious.

The show shines not just through its music, but through its message. What defines a queer anthem? According to Prodea, it’s more than a bop - it’s a battle cry, a balm, a beacon. This theme holds the show together beautifully, reminding the audience that behind every diva and flamboyant pop hit lies a story of survival, freedom, and love.

Prodea, a stalwart of Adelaide’s theatre scene with over 20 years of experience, brings vocal finesse and theatrical gravitas to each number. His previous accolades, like the Adelaide Critics Circle Individual Award and his standout performance as Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz, are no surprise after witnessing the raw talent on display here.

Presented by rising producer (and Prodea’s partner) Matthew Liersch, A Friend of Dorothy is more than a tribute, it's a testament. A testament to queer resilience, the power of music to transform lives, and the beauty of owning your story - loudly, proudly, and in fabulous sequins.

Although A Friend of Dorothy – Anthems of Pride has now finished its Adelaide Fringe season, I’m sure it’s not the last we’ve seen of Prodea’s talent.
