From the latest work by Japan's most talked-about contemporary circus company, CIRQUEWORK, we're given the Australian premiere of YOAH!
You know your show has been running excellently when you can bring together an almost full house (or tent) on a scorching Wednesday night! But clearly, Yoah has gained quite a reputation, and the show lives up to it! The show brings together creative uses of augmented reality against sheets, accompanied by immersive sound design and in-person performances. It'd probably be recommended to find a seat that's not facing a sheet at an angle, as you might see more behind-the-scenes work than what I'd imagine the group would prefer to show.
The variety of tricks and showcases that YOAH offers are more or less what you'd expect from a circus act, especially during the Fringe season. You have the trapeze, juggling, balance acts, and aerial silk dancing. Not to say that they aren't impressive, especially when performed by a very talented group that had charisma and energy to spare. However, the way that the standard performances are recontextualized in a traditional Japanese way is quite engaging. Especially the chair stacking!
Overall, while YOAH doesn't bring the most unique set of performances, the presentation and charismatic acrobats make for an impressive experience. If you're after a riveting circus show in Gluttony, I can definitely recommend YOAH. However, a slight warning for those sensitive to flashing lights, as there are quite a few strobe sequences.
