The High Tease High Tea events are fun, flirty and laugh-filled high tea parties that combine entertaining burlesque routines, interactive games, wacky and glamorous costumes, nibbles, and cocktails, all in the luxe location of rooftop bar Nineteen Ten, to create a memorable group experience at Fringe. If you’re looking for an enjoyably light-hearted and unique event to get a group together for, the High Tease High Teas events are for you, with ALICE IN WONDERLAND being the first in the series of three over the course of Adelaide Fringe. Throughout the two hours, the audience enjoys a mix of sultry and comedic burlesque routines, some delectable nibbles, an array of cocktails to purchase, interactive games, and time for chatter, all on the stunning rooftop bar area of Nineteen Ten, which provides the skyline of Adelaide as a stunning backdrop. In the ALICE IN WONDERLAND event, a selection of the bizarre, wacky and weird Alice in Wonderland characters filled the rooftop space, including an elegant Alice, a devilish and sequin-covered Mad Hatter, a loudly time-conscious and jittery March Hare, a wacky towering Caterpillar, and the attention-commanding Red Queen (the sassy Carmel Clavin) who entertainingly hosted the afternoon event. Some burlesque routines leaned into a more classic sexy tease with smaller humour thrown in, while others were directly dedicated to creating plenty of laughs (such as the memorable Caterpillar and their many, many, many hands) – they were all enjoyable in their own way. The variety of routines and performers kept the two hours flowing, and removed the possibility of boredom as each new act produced something fresh and fun. In-between these routines, the Red Queen kept things moving along, alongside the March Hare, and these two had plenty of humorous interactions – the March Hare’s energetic anxiety and bursts of theatrical stressed yelling were quite the comedic relief to the amusement of the audience. Audience interaction was an unsurprising addition throughout the afternoon, encouraged by the use of games like bingo and trivia. If you dress up for any of the future high tea events (which is highly encouraged), note that more than likely you will end up on the stage in some form of competition, such as a chaotically fun game of croquet. The high tea food provided was a small plate of nibbles, including sliced wraps, a mini cheesecake and mini muffin, but this is a snack-size serving and nothing too substantial. A range of cocktails are available throughout the high teas to purchase, and a lovely additional touch to the Alice-themed event was to serve them in different types of individual teapots which was simply delightful. One criticism is that the conversation spaces purposely created in-between performances and games was tricky to enjoy as the music was overwhelmingly loud. Unfortunately, having to yell at each other over what should have been more subtle background music was not the most pleasant way to have a conversation, but this is an easy fix for their future events. Although this Alice in Wonderland themed event was a one-off, Jazida Productions are hosting two more High Tease High Teas to enjoy, including Under The Sea and Rocky Horror. You don’t have to be fans of any of the themes to thoroughly enjoy these rooftop parties, so get a group together and make your Sunday extra-special with one of the High Tease High Teas. This High Tease High Tea was a bit of flirty fun as the audience was taken down a glittery rabbit hole, entering into a scantily-clad burlesque wonderland, filled with plenty of personalities in the perfect space for some group fun.
