Dom Chambers drew a crowd of loyal fans to his sold out Saturday night performance of his particular brand of comedic magic. The crowd was primed to laugh and be wowed, and they were not disappointed. Chambers opened his show by making glass after glass of beer appear out of an apparently empty paper bag, accompanied by his rapidfire banter, and to prove that the liquid inside was indeed real, he even shared these with some lucky audience members. Chambers then led us through a series of sleight of hand tricks, all performed with the speed and precision needed to pull these off. His banter included conversations with ‘Siri’ on an iPhone on the stage, with Siri also incorporated into many of the illusions performed throughout the show. Overall this was funny and well-received, though Siri’s constant insulting of Chambers became a bit tiresome after a while. One thing potential audiences should be made aware of in the May Wirth is the sight lines. I strongly recommend arriving early enough to secure a seat in the middle, to avoid tent poles obscuring the view of parts of the show, and close enough to the front that you can actually see things such as the card tricks. Seated close to the back, I had to take the front row’s word for it that the cards displayed were in fact the ones selected for the tricks. Maybe for future shows, especially if Chambers continues to pack a full house, a camera with close ups of these smaller tricks would be a good investment into the show. Overall, the show was well-paced, quickly and seamlessly moving between tricks with the banter tying them together. Although you won’t see any new or original tricks here, these classic sleight of hand tricks, card tricks and other illusions were performed with finesse and Chambers’ brand of quick humour (note the show’s M rating, for language and adult themes). This was an entertaining blend of well-performed illusions and plenty of laughs.
