Death Whistle: Music for Solo Piccolo

"It takes a brave soul to consider playing the piccolo and a person of questionable character to love it" Nicole Chamberlain.

The piccolo, with its piercing high notes, has a reputation for being one of the most obnoxious instruments in the orchestra. But the instrument has so much more to offer, and flutist Melanie Walters will explore the playful, expressive and colourful sides of the piccolo in this 60-minute recital.

Featuring Chamberlain's tongue-in-cheek 2019 piece 'Death Whistle', the program will also include works by Kaija Saariaho, Carla Rees and more!

"This highly original program was superbly played by Walters, whose command of the tonal possibilities of this underrated instrument is truly exceptional" ★★★★★ The Advertiser.

Melanie Walters’ performance career includes playing beer bottles and party whistles on ABC Classic FM, performing in an ensemble dressed in paper in a Massachusetts art gallery, and marching in the 2000-piece band in the Sydney Olympics. Influenced by her misspent youth playing in flute ensembles and bashing out Bartok miniatures on the piano, she now specialises in performing contemporary flute music.
Melanie holds a PhD in flute performance, for which she received a Dean’s Commendation. She has performed for organisations including Musica Viva, Bang on a Can, COMA, and the Australian Flute Festival. As well as playing regularly as principal flute of the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, she can often be heard making strange, improvised sounds in venues like The Metro, and on ThreeD Radio.
